Jason Gray Wins First Ever

KayakSlam Championship!

Jason Gray

Some of the best kayak anglers from around the state gathered at Bayshore Park in Charlotte Harbor for the culmination of the first season of the KayakSlam Tournament Series.

Near perfect conditions gave competitors one last chance to show their angling skill. Several favorites were in attendance including both Angler of the Year winners: Cameron SchurlKnight- West Coast Angler of the Year and David McCleaf- Southwest Angler of the Year.

In the KayakSlam Championship, all Yearly Points are erased and all anglers are even at the beginning of the event.  Each angler is challenged to catch a grand slam (trout, redfish, and snook fishing from a kayak using only artificial lures.  Awards are given for the top five places plus longest trout, redfish, and snook categories.

The Trophies

At the weigh in, the top five anglers all recorded slams with some excellent individual fish entered.  Jason Gray posted a 31” snook, while Jim Monahan edged out Andrei Stromann by time with a 20” trout.  The big snook was caught by Pete Poletti at 31.50”.

With some drama at the close of the weigh in, Cameron Schurlknight and Spencer Goodwin showed 6 minutes late and were unable to enter their fish, according to reports both would have made the top five!

A lesson learned by the young guns of the KayakSlam Series and we’re sure to see Cameron and Spencer in many more top fives in the years to come!

With the final tally, Jason Gray takes home the first ever KayakSlam Championship with 67.5 inches and a strong snook.  Jason edged out 2nd place David McCleaf by 5 inches.
